The Mandate

The Health, Wellness and Chronic Disease Prevention (HWCDP) Workgroup advocates for action on prevention of chronic diseases and their risk factors as well as promotion of health, and wellness in Ontario.

The aim of workgroup is to inform the adoption and strengthening and effective implementation of, frameworks, policies and programs that address health and wellness and the management of chronic diseases. The workgroup also seeks to improve integration, collaboration, and coordination with stakeholders in the prevention of chronic disease and promote health and wellness across the province.

Current Activities

The workgroup is currently focused on CDP topics/issues related to:

  • Patients’ First;
  • the Ontario Public Health Standards;
  • Plain and Standardized Packaging for Tobacco Products;
  • Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Framework;
  • Federal-Provincial Health Accord;

The members within the Workgroup have to date formed two sub-groups that help to coordinate and inform the main activities of the Workgroup and Association at large, including:

  • The Patients’ First sub-group – working towards identifying and suggesting program and policy opportunities to integrate CDP into the Patients’ First health system transformation agenda;
  • The Ontario Public Health Standards sub-group – planning on providing feedback to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care during the revision of the Ontario Public Health Standards

Recent Accomplishments

  • The workgroup prepared and submitted a letter on behalf of OPHA in response to the consultation document, “Plain and Standardized Packing” for Tobacco Products that was issued by Health Canada.
