OPHA provides preliminary assessment of alcohol regulations proposed in the 2019 Ontario Budget

May 7, 2019

The 2019 Ontario Budget included several proposed changes to alcohol regulations in Ontario, including further alcohol retail expansion, an earlier start time for sale at bars and restaurants, a new permit for BYOB tailgate events, and municipal authority to allow public drinking on municipal property (e.g. parks). The OPHA Alcohol Workgroup has prepared this preliminary assessment to assist in better understanding the policy context and public health perspective related to the alcohol policy changes proposed in the 2019 Ontario Budget. We are encouraging municipalities and Public Health Units to work together to understand these changes and identify potential action that can be taken at the local level.
