Yesterday afternoon, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty tabled the 2014 Federal Budget in the House of Commons. The Budget defines fiscal priorities for the upcoming year, and describes how the Government intends to implement them.
The OPHA commends the inclusion of a tobacco tax increase of $4 per carton of 200 cigarettes (the first such increase since 2002), the cancellation the discount on tobacco sold at duty-free stores, and measures to fight contraband tobacco products, in this year’s Federal Budget. We believe that this will have the positive effects of reducing smoking rates in Canada, especially among youth, preventing people from starting to smoke, and reducing costs related to the treatment of individuals with life-threatening smoking-related illnesses.
