New Infant Formula Preparation Video from York Region Public Health

New Infant Formula Preparation Video from York Region Public Health
By Laura Atkinson, Registered Dietitian, York Region Public Health

Preparing infant formula safely is important. Up until now, Canadian online videos on how to prepare infant formula have been connected to commercial products or informal, non-health regulated professional advice. This can lead clients to inaccurate nutrition and feeding information or advice. It can also expose clients, during this sensitive and vulnerable period, to the powerful, targeted marketing approaches used by commercial industry (e.g. formula companies, infant specialty products).

Increasingly, clients are using online videos to learn about health information. There is now an instructional YouTube video by York Region Public Health that support families’ feeding decision and teaches how to safely prepare infant formula for their baby. This 7-minute video reviews:

  • Types of formula
  • Water safety
  • Equipment safety
  • Preparing formula
  • Storing formula
  • Warming options
This video is for families who have made an informed decision to offer formula. For more information on supporting clients on making an informed decision, refer to Informed Decision Making: Having Meaningful Conversations Regarding Infant Feeding by the BFI Strategy for Ontario.
