Food and Nutrition Policy Engagement Workshop: A Recap

Food and Nutrition Policy Engagement Workshop: A Recap
On May 28th, 2014, the NRC hosted a Food and Nutrition Policy Engagement Workshop called “How the System Works, and How to Work the System”. Facilitated by Sean Moore of the Advocacy School, the day brought together community and public health professionals, family health and chronic disease prevention professionals, health leaders and policy makers, and others with an interest in learning more about policy engagement and public-policy advocacy. Sean was, as always, engaging and interesting, and interacted throughout the day with our attendees. In addition to answering numerous questions, he suggested several resources – some of which are available on the Advocacy School website.

We were fortunate to secure Bill Smeaton, Former Mayor and Councillor of the City of Niagara Falls, Debbie Field (@debbie_field), the Executive Director of FoodShare, and Mark Holland (@markhollandlib), the Director of Health Promotion and Public Affairs at Heart and Stroke Foundation as speakers. While each offered their own unique suggestions on how to be effective in dealing with decision-makers on policy issues, our speakers complemented one other and provided very practical advice to the audience.

If you were not able to attend, you can still learn more about what was covered during the day - we were live Tweeting throughout the workshop (using #nrcpew2014), and have created a Storify summary of our notes and pictures. Check it out here, and be sure to follow NRC on Twitter! Also, check back to the NRC events page often to learn all about our upcoming webinars, workshops, and other events.
