Nutrition North's impact on northerners uncertain, auditor general says

Aboriginal Affairs does not know whether retailers in the North are passing on savings to consumers as a result of its Nutrition North program to make healthy food more affordable in remote northern parts of the country, the federal auditor general has found.

At long last menu labeling, and worth the wait!

The FDA released its long-awaited regulations on menu labeling on Tuesday morning. The regulations apply across the board to: meals from sit‐down restaurants, foods purchased at drive‐through windows, take‐out food, and many more. The only exceptions: foods from grocery stores or delis that require additional preparation such as deli meats, cheeses, or large deli salads.

Ontario is reintroducing legislation that, if passed, will require large chain food service premises, like fast food restaurants, to post calories on menus to help Ontarians to make well-informed choices of what they eat and feed their children. The Making Healthier Choices Act is a key component of the Healthy Kids Strategy, which responds to the Healthy Kids Panel's recommendations for reducing childhood obesity.
