Pan American Health Organization Nutrient Profile Model

Nutrients The purpose of nutrient profiling is to provide a tool to classify food and drink products that are in excess of free sugars, salt, total fat, saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. The Expert Consultation Group described in this report was commissioned to develop a Nutrient Prole Model for the Pan American Health Organization to be used as a tool in the design and implementation of various regulatory strategies related to the prevention and control of obesity/overweight, including the following: restriction of marketing to kids; regulation of school food environments; use of front-of-package warning labels; definition of taxation policies to limit consumption of unhealthy food; assessment of agricultural policies; and identification of foods to be provided by social programs to vulnerable groups.
