Measuring the Food Environment in Canada

Food Environment The report examines research evidence, limitations and gaps as well as the current state of knowledge on the Canadian food environment and health-related outcomes in relation to the food accessibility and availability policy priority of the Curbing Childhood Obesity Framework.

The report focuses on the retail food environment such as grocery stores and restaurants as well as the traditional food acquisition environment, such as hunting and fishing. A literature synthesis of publications up to February 2012 provided a comprehensive picture of food environment and health-related outcome research in Canada.  Interviews with key informants were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of different perspectives and actual field observations. The summary key findings were discussed in detail in each section of the report.  Based on the report findings, several recommendations were made to explore and resolve knowledge gaps in Canadian food environment research.
