Professional Specialization Certificate in Population Health Data Analysis

Designed for those who work in health or social sciences fields, the Professional Specialization Certificate in Population Health Data Analysis (PHDA) provides an excellent opportunity to revitalize your current career, earn professional development credits,* or get started in a rapidly diversifying field. This unique Continuing Studies at UVic program offers:

Do you want to learn about how to use epidemiological statistics? 

PHDA 02: Epidemiological Statistics will introduce you to the field of epidemiology. Students will critically evaluate articles in the epidemiologic literature and examine epidemiologic methods including:

  • data collection
  • study design and statistical analysis
  • ratios
  • relative risk
  • contingency tables
  • logistic and Poisson regression
  • measurement error and exposure misclassification
  • imputation of missing values
  • multilevel regression models in epidemiology

Learn valuable skills in:

  • explaining basic concepts in descriptive epidemiology
  • distinguishing among common epidemiological designs
  • identifying major categories of bias that can affect the validity of epidemiological studies
  • applying common measures of association to epidemiological data
  • employing common tools of epidemiological statistics and becoming oriented to multilevel regression models to analyze appropriate data

Looking to learn how to interpret your data in the context of geographical considerations? 

PHDA 03: Population Health and Geographic Information Systems is designed to provide hands-on experience working with a wide range of spatial data and analysis methods using ArcGIS.
You will learn:

  • the importance of the geographic nature of population health
  • basic concepts of spatial data as they apply to health data and population health applications
  • major uses of GIS in population health
  • how to use GIS to map health data
  • spatial techniques to analyze health data
  • how to critically interpret spatial approaches and methodology in population health

Courses run May to July 2018. Continuous enrollment is available for this program and three sets of courses are offered per year. Registration is open until Friday, April 20, subject to availability. Please review program eligibility requirements on the website and allow time for your application to be processed prior to the registration deadline.
These fully online, non-credit courses are offered as a partnership between Population Data BC, the University of Victoria, Division of Continuing Studies and the Department of Geography.
