The industrialization of livestock production and modern dietary patterns are having momentous yet under-appreciated effects on human health, food insecurity, equity, and environmental sustainability.

In this webinar, join Dr. Tony Weis, Associate Professor of Geography at Western University and author of the highly acclaimed The Ecological Hoofprint: The Global Burden of Industrial Livestock, as he explores the links between global and domestic industrialized agriculture, modern diets, food insecurity, health, equity, and the environment, and reflects on the potential implications for Ontario's food system and dietetic practice.

Meet Our Presenter

Dr. Tony Weis is an Associate Professor of Geography at Western University. Dr. Weis' research and teaching are broadly located in the field of political ecology; his research focuses mainly on agriculture while his teaching has largely revolved around subjects of environmental change, conservation, development, and inequality.

Dr. Weis' interest in the wider political economic context of small farmer livelihoods – in particular structural adjustment and intensifying global market integration – led him towards his first widely acclaimed book: The Global Food Economy: The Battle for the Future of Farming (2007). In it, Dr. Weis attempts to understand the structural imbalances, social tensions, and ecological instabilities in the global system of agricultural production and trade, how this system came to be, and how it might be transformed.

In his second book, The Ecological Hoofprint: The Global Burden of Industrial Livestock (2013), Dr. Weis attempts to provide a new way of understanding how the growth of industrial livestock production, food security, dietary change, and environmental problems are interwoven, and why they must be urgently confronted.
